Book Review: “Aazadi to Union Territory”

Literature, most prominently the art of writing cultivates the acumen to preserve and deliver, in one who seeks it. Possibly, the following scenario fits with the persona of Mr. Ashraf Wani. Mr. Wani is one of the pillars of broadcast journalism in Kashmir. Starting his journey as a broadcast journalist from DD Doordarshan, then switching to the TV Today network today Ashraf Wani has become the face of the India Today media group in the valley. Despite being a part of the hardcore media stream which is always adamant about enforcing the opinion of the majority alone, Mr. Wani has made a difference.

As in one of his interviews with the Lalteen news desk, Mr. Wani said, “always a journalist while eliminating the bias should carry forward the motivation of fairness. Passing judgments is not the role of a real journalist. In fact, it is the responsibility of a journalist to balance a story by shedding the light on each aspect.” This year it struck many as a surprise when Mr. Wani’s Book “Aazadi to Union territory” hit the stands. Based on the facts, this book symbolises the diversion in the discourse of a struggle aiming to land at a clear resolution.

Kudos to the authorial ship of Mr. Wani! His style of neat writing and depicting the subject or context “as it is” is a dexterous craft. For the first time in the history of journalism Daniel Defoe for writing “Robinson Crusoe” was considered somebody as a reporter journalist. Matching the similar art of the legend’s way of narration by explaining each thin and thick detail in the story, Azaadi to Union territory is a blend of reality, rhetoric and relevance.
