Influencing the Deaf and Dumb
Social Media being a modern tool for public communication, has led to many trends and communication patterns so that no one in the present world is unaffected by it. Psychologically, socially, culturally, commercially and even politically, the audience has been manipulated over time and major changes in these domains can be seen today. Social media has its positive aspects, but users also tend to dominate each other, and overall, media dominates society at large.
Media agencies and reputed organizations have an established audience already, and they deliver content and ideas in an organized manner for commercial, social, or professional gains mostly. These sources may also use social media for a hidden agenda or propaganda sometimes. In this scenario, some users eventually get a good online following, maybe because of their post content, but they also give out their opinions and ideas, which many may carry. Such social media users are so-called or claim to be social media influencers.
Is influencing people a new normal?
Indeed people have their opinions, choices and preferences. Although our world of perceptions is based on principles borrowed from religions, cultures, and our own intellect. The pool of ideologies on social media gives our minds many ways to think, and results can be good as well as bad. Mostly seen that many misconceptions have been developed online by users themselves. Likely, to get more hits on the post, a creator will sensationalize or portray a simple idea in a much more exotic and fantasy way. Social media compels most of the users to express much and expect a great response in return. This compulsive nature of social media tempts a user to exaggerate the ideas and values to be shared.
Now that exaggeration on social media is already common, and people can almost distinguish between realistic and fake content or between information and misinformation, what can be the reason? why the audience is still blindly consuming the content? Apparently, it’s because of the addiction to find more exotic content, and it’s the exact point where social media influencers keep their audience engaged and attached.
Today anyone with a good following starts speaking on social issues which they themselves have no idea of. Just because they have an audience, they feel an urge to justify it by pretending to be worthy, respectful, or scholarly. Although the audience is critical to some extent, overall, the influencer dominates the masses.
Everyone today wants to act like a social worker, start speaking about social issues and often put society in more trouble with inappropriate and immature ideas. To speak within a culture and community, one must realize every aspect which may hurt or affect the individuals. Also, many social media influencers are victims of misinformation and cultural politics, hence becoming just another carrier of that misinformation. So before putting any idea in the public domain, one must research well.
There is a need to have criteria to start speaking about social, cultural, ethical, and moral values. Until one is not an expert in a particular field, he should not advise the general public, considering it a responsibility. Recently seen was that many people were talking about mental health, which is a sensitive issue and there is no doubt that many people got wrong advises and lead to their worsened conditions. Also, many have become motivational speakers whose own lives are messy, and such people talk according to the audience’s convenience, whether right or wrong, ethical or unethical.
